You are right a backup power supply could be provided.
The essence of the whole fiasco however is that the Government is destroying an independant entity (both yourself and Telstra are independant entities at law)and trashing their property unless they share it with someone else.
How would you like the government to threaten to demolish your family home unless you "donate" its use to as many of the homeless as they insist on.
