    Re your post which included;
    " If we are so bad answer me this. ..."

    Nations bordering asylum seeker source countries such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria and Sri Lanka are indeed already taking the very great bulk of the 46M+ asylum seekers and refugees.

    Not only have some of those countries been swamped by displaced, desperate and vulnerable people seeking refuge they have also been severely impacted by them.

    Let's not forget that military interventions by the USA, Australia and the UK have exacerbated the situation; we have a moral obligation to vulnerable people.

    Our son married into one such Iranian family that had to leave at the height of persecution following the installation of Islamic extremists in Iran. That family was fractured for almost a decade of struggle and deprivation before the family was able to re-unite.

    We are deeply proud of our son for putting aside all the prejudice and discrimination embedded in our society. He tutored his wife, her sister and her brother; thereby enabling all three to complete university education and gain highly skilled jobs in Australia.

    Sadly our pollies exploit Australians' long history of xenophobia for their own disgusting political ends. They almost never tell stories such as that we have experienced courtesy of our son.

    People like me do not see asylum seekers and refugees as cheats and threats; to us they are little different than those who fled Europe after WW1, WW2 and SE Asia after the Vietnam War. They are just as likely to call Australia home and assist Australia to evolve into a more mature and more dynamic nation.
