The litigation is not counterproductive because it is the only way with the current government to overturn a corrupt law-making process.
I am a logical thinker and don't usually entertain conspiracy theories, but the Uranium ban put in place at the eleventh hour by the last IA Government to stop the ETM project screams corruption.
Prime Minister Mute Egede let slip that the law was basically not health or environment-related but instead served to stop a mine going ahead because it had Chinese interests (albeit only 9%).
I am sure this will be one of the first questions asked of Mr Edede when the case gets to court.
Your immediate thought is that the U.S. (which has a base in Greenland) played an underhanded role in getting the law passed. It would be interesting, for the sake of transparency, for a court to forensically examine the individual finances of the IA cabal that forced through the law, as it might turn up some very strange transactions.
Tanbreez, on the other hand, was waved through even though it is likely to have, on part or all of its tenement, similar low levels of Uranium contamination as its neighbour. The difference, of course, is its U.S. and not Chinese-based shareholding.
It is disappointing that the incoming government decided to join with I.A. in a grand anti-U.S. coalition, because we ended up with the same cabal that introduced the law still calling the shots. The invisible Democrat leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, appears to be a dupe and the Prime Minister in name only.
But circumstances change, and the U.S. under Trump has now upped the ante and is not just content to put a stick in the spokes of a 'Chinese' project, but now wants all of Greenland. This is a game changer.
Before the last election, I thought the pro-independence party Naleraq probably now had the backing of the U.S, and if they had won, I'm sure Greenland would now be entertaining a compact of free association with the U.S. Naleraq certainly came from the clouds and almost pulled off a victory only falling at the last hurdle.
However, IA has now switched from being useful to U.S. interests to being a hindrance, and so don't be surprised if the current coalition blows up as they are wont to do, and we arrive at a Democrat/Naleraq Government.
If it happens, then the Uranium ban will likely be lifted and ETM will get the go-ahead.
Of course, it needs to happen sooner rather than later to take advantage of the super majority that a Democrat/Naleraq coalition would hold, because there would be no prospect of a government collapse and they would have almost four unchallenged years to turbocharge the economy through rare earths mining.
The genie would be out of the bottle, rare earths would be on the high seas, and there would be little chance of a blowback for a Democrat/Naleraq coalition at the next election for lifting the uranium ban if the economy is booming.
