Scooby and Denk: here are some of my confused thoughts and you can tear me to pieces, if you like, but I do ruminate on this and try and rejoice whenever I see a creative idea on TV, Radio or in conversation (or Hotcopper!) on how to deal with any of the following:

Firstly, the realities of this time in history is that fewer people will get those basic jobs as - and you have stated it -
more and more mechanisation is taking jobs away;
Essentially people in charge, i.e. parents, teachers, bosses, governments will have to come up with creative ideas for new jobs and a different way to earn a living and first and foremost, a better division of labor for the existing jobs. 'Competition' will have to make way for some kind of enlightened 'sharing' of existing jobs (and please don't shout 'communist').
There will jobs growth in existing industries; the service industries will be busier than ever; there could be lots of new jobs and business opportunities in industries which deal with global warming and the technologies and gadgets which will make life livable under warmer conditions ............
BUT at the moment we are still not facing reality on many of those issues; our rich people like to hoard their riches and keep on growing them and shout 'efficiencies' or 'AGM and responsibilities to shareholders' every time they are questioned on more dismissals;
in Australia 'global warming' is still a swear word and soon it will be worse in the U.S. - hence we are going to tread water for a long time before that hiatus is breached and the new opportunities become clear to all of us.
The social pyramid which should have a broad base of the 'common folk' with a reasonable wage and income at the bottom and slowly grow to a thin peak with only a few very wealthy on top is actually beginning to stand on its head, with a narrow base of super-wealthy at the bottom and a huge amount of poor and poorer at the top, thus standing the pyramid on its head - it will topple, make no mistake about it; I'll leave it to your imagination to figure out, what could ensue.
What I am saying is; we are on the verge of huge challenges, a second or third industrial revolution, but also huge opportunities - will it need a bloody revolution or natural disasters to wake us up? or will we simply go into the sunset 'twittering' or chatting inanities on our mobile phones?
