Perth, Australia, Dec 5, 2007 - (ABN Newswire) - Golden West Resources Limited (Golden West)(ASX: GWR.AX) is pleased to announce that experienced iron ore executive Geoff Wedlock has today formally commenced his duties as Chairman of the Company.

Mr Wedlock has more than 35 years experience in the iron ore exploration and development industry and his appointment heralds a new era for the Company as it seeks to develop its flagship Wiluna West Iron Ore Project.

The appointment of Mr Wedlock follows the retirement of the Company's founding Chairman Dr John Daniels.

The Company extends its sincerest thanks to Dr Daniels for his outstanding contribution since Golden West's inception and listing in 2004 and wishes him a long and enjoyable retirement.

Mr Wedlock's appointment is consistent with Golden West's strategy to build the Company's management capability to reflect the growing potential of the Wiluna West Iron Ore Project.

Prior to joining Golden West, Mr Wedlock held a number of senior executive roles in the iron ore industry. He is a former managing director of leading iron ore miner Portman Mining, advanced magnetite developer Grange Resources, and Executive Vice President and CEO of BHP Iron Ore Pty Ltd, where he played a key role in the development of many of BHP's major assets in the Pilbara.

Mr Wedlock brings not only a deep understanding of the iron ore industry and the challenges associated with the development of major projects, but an extensive network of contacts within the international mining and investment communities.

    Fairstar eyes golden future

Lawyers are working overtime in Perth as the takeover battle between mining minor Fairstar Resources and its much-larger-but-not-really-that-big target Golden West gets decidedly nasty.
Golden West has announced that one of its shareholders had requisitioned an extraordinary meeting so that it could try and vote three directors with links to the bidder off the Golden West board.

Those three directors include Alan Rudd, who sits on both Golden West and Fairstar boards, Michael Wilson, a significant shareholder in Fairstar, and Con Markopoulos, a director of a company with major links to Fairstar.

The vote to remove Markopoulos is particularly interesting, as he managed to get himself appointed to the board committee that was responsible for planning Golden West’s defence.

Meanwhile, Fairstar is returning fire by making a legal challenge against the recent appointment of Geoff Wedlock as chairman of Golden West.

Minter Ellison and Lawton Gillon are doing the legal work for Fairstar, which has already involved several trips to the Takeovers Panel, and Pullinger Readhead Lucas is doing the legal duties for Golden West.

Azure Capital’s Michael Minosara is the financial advisor to Golden West, while Robin Armstrong and Mike Doyle from the recently-floated Findlay is advising Fairstar.

so my question is....why did these 3 directors, who now makeup the majority of the GWR board,do there darndest to inhibit the company?were they then acting solely with the best interests of GWR in mind?can you honestly say 100% that they were?its actions like these, their history, that keeps me from trusting them with my company to do what they like, when it suits them, without someone to keep them in checkand is why i believe we need to mix up the make up of the board to keep everyone honest.no ulterior motives here.
