Arguably the biggest obstacle to aboriginals "lifting themselves up" is kinship obligations.

The concept of "individual ownership" is almost foreign to many, not all, but it still can be a significant impediment.

So when one starts to get ahead his kinship requires sharing of the gains even when others have provided no input to achieving those gains.
