Yikes! Where to begin?
Ok...
‘Why do atheists deem it necessary to proselytize?’ – Ignoring the fact that every religion ever conceived is guilty of this to some extent...but the question was why do atheists deem it necessary. I can only speak for myself, but I think religion is holding back human progress. Now I don’t even know where to begin on this topic but I am thinking along the lines of the violence and harm it can promote, condemning euthanasia, contraception, stem cell research, homosexuality and most importantly discouraging free thinking. Where would society be now if religion didn’t hold back the ideas of thinkers like Socrates and De Vinci?
(I can see that I have lumped religion into one big category and that different religions have different opinions on these topics).
‘life lived with absolutely no purpose whatsoever’ – what complete and utter drivel. We live on an amazing planet 6 billion years in the making. If you ever think there is no purpose to life, go outside and look at the wide diversity of language and culture we have around us. Look at the plants and animals in the many different environments across the globe or the complexity of the universe. Find some things that interests you; basket ball, human anatomy, flying aeroplanes, bush walking, knitting, English literature, interpretive dance, and do it to your little heart’s content. Better yet, find someone else who also likes that activity and do it with them! Or if you can’t be bothered going outside in the first place...just watch your children for 5 seconds and then tell me if you still wonder why anybody could think there is no purpose to life.
"what, don't preach that bible stuff to me, i know better, i'm going in the ground when i die to feed the worms and i won't be held accountable for anything i do, so keep your evil religion away from me."
I am lost for words. There was a discussion very recently about atheists and morals. I thought this topic was made perfectly clear. You certainly didn’t disagree with anything that was posted. ‘i won't be held accountable for anything’ – I just can’t comment on the ridiculousness of that comment.
Ok I don’t have children. I can’t even imagine how hard it would be to tell a child that their mother has just died. But it doesn’t matter how hard a task is, we cannot hide behind fairy tales to protect us from pain. Shutting your eyes and blocking your ears is an evasion of reality, dodging the truth and quite frankly a copout. What did I say about religion holding us back?
