Because I believe the cosmos is "structured" in such a way that human consciousness would evolve to the point (and beyond) that such questions would be contemplated.
Is there an afterlife?
I believe so. If there isn't at the point of death we're all in the same position. If there is then those that have sought the "truth" during their lives are in a much better position than those that haven't.
What's the "truth"?
A life spent sincerely seeking the "truth" will reveal the answer to this question to each of us.
