In biological terms, males are much less important than are females, to the species survival. A male is capable of producing enough sperm to generate thousands of offspring (given the right circumstances of course) every day, but a female can only produce one (or twins etc) every 9 months. If one (lucky) male is capable of fertilising so many females, then plainly speaking males are more disposable than females. Thats why in general males are more self destructive and take bigger risk takers (more soldiers are males for example).
