That question should be directed at Gillard and Swan. It was THEY who fixated about it and lied 500 times that they could achieve it.

The non-labor camp here derided the effort of labor blowing a surplus and going so far the other way, but I got the feeling we were not advocating an IMMEDIATE return to surplus. Even Joe is aware that it can't be achieved o'night without killing the economy.

But if you need an example of why it is a good thing to get into surplus, think how deep in the dodo we would be if labor had started with a BIG deficit.
