I am not sure if the original question has been answered in the above posts. But after listening to a recent report on BBC about a woman in Afghanistan who gave birth to nine children, only to see them all die due to ignorance perpetrated by religious male misogynists, one can understand why some women, at least in poor regions of the world, whould like to have been born male.

Some answers might be found in the book titled "Y" The Descent of Men by Steve Jones (Charles Darwin wrote The Descent of Man)

In his book, Jones states: Those that make sperm take a free ride at the expense of their opposite numbers, for men - by defination - do not give birth. Instead, they use female flesh to copy their own DNA. IMO, this is something the lady in Afghanistan could related to. But her story does have a happy ending. After receiving some education - much to the chagrin of the misogynists no doubt - she did give birth to several more children, all of whom survived.
