They arise because the Reformation people decided that personal interpretation of the scripture trumped the Catholic Church's stand that authority to interpret what the Bible taught lies with the Church and not with personal interpretation. Hence the thousands of protestant churchs each with their own undertanding with what the Bible says. Is that logical? What it does is open the Bible to ridicule by non believers and they enjoy it as we see here.
Before the Reformation only the Church had Authority to interpret Scripture and people accepted that.
