Hi there, I certainly agree that the ETF market is a great deal more mature in Australia than the US, and there appear to be less available as well. However there has been recently a fair bit of development with new products launched recently.
For example, if you are keen to access the ASX Resources Sector you might want to check out a product with the ASX code QRE, an ETF that is linked to that sector. Also, if you are keen to check out the ASX Financials Sector, there is a product with the ASX code QFN. If you are interested in the Property Trusts sector check out either ASX Code VAP or SLF.
