alh,
I'm not sure if being the PM is an important objective of Ms Gillard, many other objectives are on her agenda.
However, increasing the pay level of the PM and MP's in general is way overdue and still too low.
Very few quality people are encouraged to enter politics while their remuneration is so low.
Its the biggest business in Australia and it attracts those that seek prestige and power, or those with a hidden agenda, it does not attract quality.
Why would a stable, balanced, upstanding and respected member of the community give up normality and disrupt their career path and their family's interests unless they hungered for the trappings that come with being a member of parliament?
And part of the answer to that is, some do see the need to give to the community and put their personal interests into second position, but most see it as a means for self gratification or achieving an ideological agenda.
While politicians should be payed the big bucks, they should also be liable for lengthy periods of imprisonment for any deceptive or criminal activity.
Pay peanuts get monkeys.
The current system encourages either puppets of the mobsters or the vane and egotistical rejects of society. Only a handful of good people get to be an MP.
It never ceases to amaze me how people complain about the remuneration of Members of Parliament while ignoring the unbelievable waste that they inflict on Tax Payers Money.
Here ends my rant.
