Everything is possible, but I’d be very surprised if any serious institutional player utilised that sort of approach.
Just imagine, if the short-selling strategy goes wrong and the stock goes up, having to justify it all to your management/shareholders/fundholders:
“…so we thought the stock had good fundamental characteristics, and wanted to build a position in it. But, because we thought the price was too high, we started shorting it instead, hoping to achieve a better entry point; then, unfortunately, the market moved against us and we lost XXXm$…”
I wouldn’t want to find myself in that position, would you?
