I am going to grossly oversimplify, could it be that some think that CGF has a "subprime" problem? Remember RC revealed lax lending standards with a excessive reliance of interest only loans by the banks.

You might be right.
But then, again, why not address the “problem” directly?
I mean, if one has a negative view of the RMBS/CMBS market, wouldn’t it make more sense to take a short position on a RMBS/CMBS index? Or on a specific basket of similar securities?
Or, if the shorters are constrained to operate within the long/short equity space, wouldn’t it make more sense to short the banks (which have much higher leverage to mortgages and much worse growth prospects)?
