This gets repeated all the time, but never made much sense to me. 40B is nothing against a GDP of 4 trillion. Couple of extra grumbly old men, but life goes on. Divided evenly across a population of 125 million, it's $320 per year per person, and where it's an input cost, I'm sure it just gets passed onto whichever countries buy their products. A trivial price to pay to ward off Gojira.
