Selling because the price falls is not "protection," it's called a lack of patience and an inability to back one's calls. Only the fundamentals should determine when one should buy and sell (we are investing in a company not a share price after all), the price has no bearing on such matters.

Yes, people may need to free up cash for a one off and unexpected expense. That's why you only invest what you can afford to lose, always make sure you have cash available (ie in a term deposit or some other risk free investment)
