Do we think that there is any single Big Pharma that could or should I say SHOULD assume control over medications that will have such a significant impact on medicine ever seen since the creation of antibiotics. It would be very interesting to do research into how antibiotics were introduced and distributed at what cost, to what socio economic groups and to what countries. That could be said for other material inventions such as key vaccinations and certain other cancer treatments over time.
We know that other cancer treatments that are not government subsidised are sold at extortionist rates and if people cannot fund their cost they cannot access them.
From a philosophical perspective of course private enterprise must be rewarded yet should they equally have a threshold return on that investment. But I guess it’s like telling Gina Reinhardt that she has made enough money from iron ore and the same for other significant projects. We live in a capitalist society and money is king.
So yes we are all thrilled with the share price starting to move again on great news with the potential for many of us in this small enclave of Imugeeners who happened to discover this brilliant stock either a long time ago (Like me) or more recently for so many others, who are looking at significant reward. But ultimately once the market FOMO dies down in time to come and we watch to see how this is commercialised, do we want to see one single BP take control?
I am not sure and indeed that scares me as I think about it.
While that is technically no different to IMU having that control as the approvals come through, stewardship of such medicines is really quite significant. There is only so much that anti trust regulation can achieve.
I am unsure of the answer but sometimes dividing the pie so that various groups share the benefit and the responsibility could be the best. But IMU won’t be insulated from being taken over and so the risk remains. Yes they could put some poison pills in place in the event of a takeover to try to defend such an event, but perhaps selling off the bits in due course might lessen the risk.
I am not sure that IMU management see this as a risk per se, as they will feel somewhat invincible and perhaps think that a huge share base will offer some insulation. But these could be the drugs of this millenium - that’s huge.
How an IMU 2 will look as has been touted is quite a leap. Yes it’s likely to be US based but existing management will want to be involved as they all still have youth on their side and money is now no reason. It’s participation in potentially one of the largest medical enterprises that could be built and I suspect that key stakeholders will have to include the main scientists too.
We will all postulate about what they might do. My view is that IMU will not want to lose control over the medications and will want to be in control of how it is developed, manufactured, distributed and sold. That does not mean it will necessarily build it and they will come type of thing, but they will licence activities out methinks, The control over these treatments will be key and I really don’t believe Mr Hopper will want to relinquish that. He will create something with many many clever people around him. Let’s hope it serves all of us.
