What you describe is the realities have how the global pharmaceutical industry works.
Fortunately, big pharma isn't one company - there exist a handful of global gorillas who are in competition.
I agree that IMU manufacturing and setting-up distribution in competition would likely be corporate suicide.
In addition, Big Pharma has a way of influencing the FDA so that new drugs that may cut-their-lunch are endlessly delayed.
The Go-To-Market for IMU (assuming they develop a block buster treatment(s) ) is to license their technology to one or several of the Big Pharma global giants leading-up to FDA approvals and play one off against the other.
Highest bidder wins.
License deals can be quite lucrative (almost zero incremental cost) and lower risk provided you don't get raped.
The only way to avoid getting raped is to start a bidding war.
It would be naive to think IMU isn't already in discussions.
But, it's too early for both to make a proper deal.
From IMU's perspective, a deal at this early stage would be at a severe discount.
