Well I guess that taxing unrealised gains is not dissimilar to the treatment of professional traders such as Slick - net capital gain during the financial year is considered taxable income. For super, the tax rate(s) may be lower though??
There's no doubt that super is a signficant vehicle for tax reduction thanks to John Howard and Peter Costello - I'm certainly a beneficiary! What will be interesting is what Chalmers plans to do with the proceeds - reduce tax for low income earners? govt debt reduction? Stimulate local industry? Increase unemployment benefits and aged pensions? Interesting times..
