Tariffs can have their place but, in the end, they hurt the country imposing them.
Current US policy has just created uncertainty die to the chaotic way they have been imposed - and the fact that they are not based on any logical method mathematically.
I also recall high tariffs in Australia (45% on motor vehicles for example). Removal of tariffs did not destroy Australia's industrial base - so called "fair trade" agreements did. Poorly negotiated.
