The IMU path

Have you ever walked into your house at night down the hallway in the dark, and for that split second before you turn the lights on, being unsure of what you may find? Or driven through a tunnel and waited nervously for the light at the end of the tunnel to appear?

Awaiting trial results for the biotech stock you are holding is no different. The question of what may lye around the corner is unknown. At the time we, as investors, experience a juxtaposition of feelings, from fear and trepidation, to adulation and success, depending on the trial outcome.

Hence the pent up excitement from investors, IMU team members and patients alike when HER Vaxx, PD1 and CF 33 (pre clinically) all came up trumps. The share price leapt forth in leaps and bounds, presentations were made and the inventors of the said cancer drugs lauded in kind. The Imugene CEO had established proof of concept, with her B cell platform producing increased levels of antibodies which in turn served to stimulate patient immune systems. As a consequence lives were prolonged over and above the standard of care (SOC), death rates were reduced and in up to 50 percent of these cases tumours were either stabilised, if not reduced.

Yet shadows appeared. As we walked through the darkness before dawn, unsure of what the new day would bring, we walked hesitantly once again toward the light. Clouds, drizzle, at times strong winds appeared, to dampen our path. In the background noises began to distract us. Journalists began to feed on our plight. Trial results appeared to move further and further ahead of us, until they were barely visible in the distance.

And what for the future? What lay ahead for us we asked? Would we be taken over by a hungry benefactor? Would the IMU team reap the benefits of a lucrative license deal? Or would we continue to walk aimlessly into the unknown, never truly reaching our destination, selling out before the light appeared. Acquiescing to the fear and trepidation, in our moment of weakness.

IMU is the road less travelled. There are no dividends, there is no contractual agreement, no one large multinational serving to smooth the path that lies ahead. Yet the breadth of cancers IMU drugs have the ability to suppress, produces the light at the end of the tunnel. The potential revenue streams are endless. The future dividends immeasurable. The light albeit blinding.

Though just as our patients produce the antibodies much needed to fight against their own deadly insurgents, we too must find the strength to overcome our inner demons. Our fear of the unknown. For whilst the IMU team is smoothing the path that lies ahead, it is us that must walk it.
