"Today the share price of ASX-listed Alterity Therapeutics Ltd ("ATH") went up an astonishing 2,000% from $0.02 to $0.40 after the Australian drug developer said it received guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the development pathway for ATH434, its lead compound.

Melbourne-based Alterity said it reached agreement with the FDA on the non-clinical investigations required to support a phase 2 study of ATH434 in multiple system atrophy, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease.

Alterity said the FDA also agreed to key aspects of the company's phase 2 study design including the proposed patient population, safety monitoring plan and strategy for evaluating drug exposure during the study.

The company said it would work with the FDA and to develop an endpoint that is best suited for the patients to be studied, as there are currently no approved treatments for multiple system atrophy and, therefore, no regulatory precedent for accepted efficacy endpoints."
