It depends on what stage of phase 2 a trial is at. Once a company establishes an optimal effective dose (without added toxicity) your drug becomes attractive all a sudden, especially if it has other attributes compared to standard treatment. Interim analyses are useful but a buyout will require more complete data including adequate follow up monitoring.
