hey Hunter, unsure on your background so I won't say anyone is right or wrong.
Unless my advisor is incorrect or this has been misinterpreted, the reason given to me was:
All of this substantial holding is to do with voting power.
At the end of the day, whoever is legally in charge of the account has the ability to vote (whenever a vote is needed), and that person whether it's ur mum, dad, son, daughter etc, they are their own person and they have the chance to vote however they want too. Just because they may be a relative it doesn't mean they will vote the same way as you.
That's what I took from the conversation I had and to me it makes sense, because if my partner was to vote her way, who's to say it will be the same way I would vote...but we still hold the same shares.

This is not advice, only my interpretation of the discussion I've had.
