We were just as close to Japan in WW2 as well. Australia is too difficult to invade and occupy as a large island nation, and there isn't much benefit invading us regardless. Sure we have commodities, but it's much easier for them to simply trade with Russia and other neighbouring countries who have many of the necessary commodities needed for war. Nukes would be wasted on Australia as we obviously wont be firing at them
