Ok Tedi does not have tailing dams and never has. The tailing went straight into the river. Another mine in PNG, Tolukuma, also uses riverine tailings disposal. Ok Tedi has in recent years built a storage facility for the pyrite which is the most acidic of the tailings and the more neutralised tailings still go into the river.
