Why?

Because he ascertains the "average Australian's" hopes and fears and then works/grandstands them.

He's successful in the doing, because

1.he does it very well,

......... and because .............

2. the "average Australian" gets ALL his information from the mainstream media via news, current affair programmes and talkback radio.

For mine, Howard sees himself as another Menzies, as the 'Father of Australians'.
