Both the IDF and the US military practise "reconnaissance by fire", a method of attack which adds very considerably to civilian casualties. The following reference describes this technique. It dates from early in the current Iraq war.

I'm not authorised to make any comment on AMF policy on reconnaissance by fire but our military has a tradition of maintaining the best possible relations with civilians in combat zones.

As to the header of this thread, we would have a more balanced debate if we asked a broader question.

Why are the US and Iran supplying Israel and Hamas with weapons?
