Kids are becoming increasingly threatening to adults due to their ability to master skills at a precocious age. This makes them competitive.

The old guy in a workplace usually has composure and wisdom to fall back on to stop them from being made redundant by increasingly skillful youth. If you lack these basic gifts that are the byproduct of resilience gained through overcoming struggle, then you are likely to still feel threatened enough as an old codger to feel compelled to engage with mouthy teenagers.

The big guy basically blinked imo.

But I'll give him this much, for someone with such low self esteem, he certainly has managed to climb to the top of the ladder, although historically this isn't uncommon (Bonaparte, Alexander the Great etc)

It is absolutely a display of insecurity and low self esteem .
The HC grubs who do it are amongst the lowest of low life going -- they are totally obsessed and driven to a frenzy just by mention of her name.
