Shorting happens when a person has a view a stock price will probably go down rather than up so they sell shares say for $10 (borrow the shares for a fee but don't buy them so they can settle the trade ) and then buy shares later on market for say $8 and make $2 profit. Then return the borrowed shares to original owner that lent them.
Sometimes the shorting is so much volume over such a long period its hard for a price recovery until the company issues some positive news.
Google "Shortman" for daily shorting volumes. Its an eye opener.
All the best.
