My concern is that if Tesla, the market leader, chooses to eliminate REs in its motors, others may follow. Maybe Musk is just trying to shakeup the market, and maybe that was just some idle ramblings that he sometimes indulges in.
Still, size and weight have to be important, and if batteries become smaller and lighter, maybe, motor weight will be less important.
