Who told you that GS did not account for the extra expenses of processing the residue, I'm sure they are not that ignorant.
Secondly, who told you that the residue (not waste) is not profitable. As far as I recall Fertilizers and Gypsum fetch pretty good prices in the world markets especially now when the level of living is rising in China and India. The Canadian Giant company Potach and the American Mosaic and CF make tons of money out of fertilizers. It could be that the income from fertilizer sales could be greater than from REE sales !
