There is nothing wrong with negative gearing, if you are setting up a business there are often initial losses.
The problem is the distortion caused by the concessional treatment of capital gains, take that away, and the incentive to convert ordinary income into speculative capital gains, subsidised by the tax system, goes away.
Abolish negative gearing and you are just treating the symptom , rather than the disease.
