Jakjazz, like you I need to provide for my retirement and used to target stocks with solid and reliable dividends. Thanks to Bill Shorten when it looked like he would be Prime Minister and get rid of franking credits, I changed my strategy to concentrate on total return. It makes no difference if the super fund total is from dividends or capital gains. So what I look for now are companies that have high returns on invested capital and the ability to reinvest in their businesses for growth, even if that means low or no dividends. My portfolio has never done better than in the last 2 financial years. In the past I had many disappointments from my dividend stocks through reduced dividends or low growth.
