Not sure if you are aware of how difficult into Harvard let alone graduate .Top ranked US university in 1965 and top ranked University today.
Part of his studies were under Roger Revelle an oceanographer and global warming theorist
You may or may not be aware of how prestigous a degree let alone a distinction from Harvard Uni is but if you are not it is right up there amongst academics employers etc .Every year since 60s when he went today it has been strong contender for top university in the world.
His attendance at Vanderbilt was to promote his his understanding of secular matters the first occassion and legal the second.Did he need to get a second degree ? Not really he already had the best .He felt as an investigative journalist he could expose corruption but with an added legal background he could change it
He dropped studies to take an opening in politics where he was successful
You maybe right that his grades in science and mathematics may not have been the best but at least he studied and passed them in one of the worlds most elite universities and how many people had studied and passed oceanography and climate science at the time of his graduation.
