According to Bankstown Express of 18th March, Bankstown Council has approved an 80 foot minaret to be built at an Islamic school in Greenacre. One Nation Councillor Lynn Abrahams, and two independents, argued against the structure, but lost. The Express reports the mayor as saying "as for the suggestions that it would be out of place in Bankstown, just have a look at the demographics". The school is partly taxpayer-funded. Many public schools in the area are still lacking some basic amenities like assembly halls.
