re: why so cheap compared to rio? BHP's oil division suffered a setback with Hurricane Katrina in America. Oil price also went towards US$55 2/3 months ago, before rising back above US$60.
RIO's share price has been boosted by a sizeable on-market buyback program on the LSE.
I reckon once BHP starts its on-market buyback on the LSE (up to 10% of BHP Billiton PLC's share capital approved to be bought back, in the recent AGM), BHP's share price will outperform RIO during that coming timeframe.
Next critical factors - iron ore pricing and coal pricing for 2006.
