"We" may not be rushing to increase coal output anytime soon but the rest of the world most certainly is. India and China are scrambling to throw in infrastructure and mines that will boost their output to meet the needs of their newly built power plants. This is no trivial matter and will play into the cyclical nature of the industry. Likely a 12-24 month lead time before we see meaningful effect on supply volumes. How demand responds will be of key importance.
India has now fast tracked approvals to clear 2600 Ha of forest to make way for new coal mines with a yearly capacity increase of 276 Mt and aims to increase yearly production by 105 Mt by FY24-25.
