I thought the Vic Police Commissioner's remark that Indians are safer in Australia than they are in India was a fair comment.

Australia remains a relatively tolerant place, but it has never been very "nurturing" and always been a bit violent -to anyone. In the seventies when I was a teenager, I don't recall a local dance that did not have a few blues at the end and so did most local football matches. Pubs were often bloodbaths and some still are. Even watching the way footy was played in VFL footy finals in the 70's gives you a sense of it.

Many immigrants come from places of strife and take time to adjust, sometimes even a generation, but we have scored some absolutely sensational people who have helped make this country what it is, like the post-war immigrants who built the Snowy Mountain Scheme, and blokes like Gustav Nossal and Victor Chang.
