Something I find quite interesting in the SOL approach as compared to other conglomerates such as WES is how small the initial investments they make are in businesses. They don't really make "transformative" purchases and tend to stay within the 20 million to 100 million dollar range to begin with before trying to grow the business with incremental further investments and also M and A which they've become more keen on in recent years and even started talking about in presentations. It was interesting to hear about how small their initial investment in what ended up becoming TPG was years and years ago (I believe it started with a TV station in Newcastle?). They really are quite unique in many ways.
