Despite the seizure of power, the coup has popular support as the populace have been unhappy with the government for some time.
Alot of the displeasure is rooted in the overthrown government being unable to quell Islamic extremist action and violence in the north.The world powers were happy to fight the "global war on terror" in Afghanistan and the middle east due to strategic influence and especially oil interests, but continues to let Al Qaeda fester in Africa.
