Extremely plausible and likely...and I think you may be on the money DaveMc, the unprecendented step of setting an election date nine months out had to have a compelling and political reason.
It may well be that once an election date is set, no by-elections will be held to fill vacant seats, which will allow the encumbent Government to hold power until they are disolved prior to the election in August.
Will we see a rush of legislations tabled now before the possible resignation of Slipper and the possible charging of Thompson leaving less votes on the floor, such as Roxon's regressive "anti discrimination" law? I do hope not.
