    I look at culture plates for a living and we are unable to issue a report based on the colony morphology of a bacterium alone, it's ID must be confirmed by further bench-top tests or methods such as MALDI-TOF. Use of chromogenic agars with the APAS system MAY allow reporting off morphology alone but I imagine it would be a tough task convincing end users and regulatory authorities to have 100% confidence that they can abandon confirmatory testing.. Both Keistra and Copan systems will (or soon will) have the smarts to
    recognise and pick significant bacterial colonies for MALDI-TOF and AST testing so again I wonder where APAS will revolutionise the microbiology laboratory. Here is a good microbiologists review of the 2 systems already in use:
