Good points, KL. On the power supply question, my understanding is that SYR will use the national grid, which has ample hydro-electric power, at low cost, as their primary source. Diesel backup is planned, but expected to be used only ten to twenty days per year. The cost difference is substantial - grid power is somewhere between four and seven cents per kilowatt-hour, whereas diesel costs more than 30 cents per kilowatt-hour.
On the port requirements, SYR planned to use Pemba at a time when shipments were estimated at 200K tonnes per year, and facilities for that volume were confirmed by the port authorities. Now it looks like SYR will be shipping 300K tonnes per year, and rising, and TON production added to that. This means that Nacala must be used for some or all of the product movement. Long-term, the RIO-Vale requirements may, as you say, force further development at Pemba. But it does not look to be a problem for some time to come.
Cheers, Prime1
