Governments of all political persuasion have been complicit in making our tax system complex by allowing various tax concessions to many groups in our society eg
- our agricultural friends who reap the benefits of numerous tax concessions together with additional benefits during times of drought;
- the numerous tax concessions given to so called 'families';
- the tax largesse enjoyed by the real estate industry (and their clients), which has the 'unintended' consquences of draining money from private employment generating enterprises and driving up house prices.
So why is this lack lustre government so intent on draining the life blood from one sector of the economy that is bringing in desperately needed foreign exchange and generating higher levels of employment?
I have no problem in removing the tax concessions given to resources enterprises as long as we go along the same path and remove the myriad of concessions allowed to other sectors of the economy.
