Hi peter,

It is my understanding that the synthetic fuel experiments were based on both coal and natural gas. The synthetic fuel used was part supplied by a South African company and/or a US company, Syntroleum .
You are correct with POC's (particles of combustion) insofar that synthetic fuels pollute more than current fuels. Current manufacturers have promised to meet pollution targets by recapturing CO2 and other pollutants produced in refining. The current US energy bill presently prevents the US Government from buying synthetic fuels that emit more pollution than petroleum. Without those efforts synthetic fuels could emit twice as much pollution.
According to the B-1 test flight, the only difference between the fuels was the smell.
Cheers, Pie :-)
