Buying a stock is not vastly different to having a bet. One analysises many aspects of each company and if you predict the SP is exc value (for either growth or divs or BOTH)you wager yr cash on the SP.
For me 'reliable, consistent and diversified' earnings is the key. Earnings (versus rev) indicates that the debt level is manageable and company is profitable. In addition the stk MUST offer exceptional divs NOW and into the forseeable future. If these criteria aren't worth something then what is?
For some 2 years UGL's strategy has been to 'guarantee' earnings and reduce risk. I say 'guarantee'in commas as there is no iron clad promise but the company is designed to provide reliability. It has many streams of income incl:

Contruction and maintenance of 'govt' electricity supply
Consruction and maintenance of govt water supply
Construction and maintenance of railway projects.
Literally scores of maintenance contracts for facilities such as schools, govt buildings, stadiums, shopping centres etc etc.
UGL construction sector is less vulnerable than most(all?) as it specialises in delivery of "essential" services. Water supply is an example. The maintenance contracts are long term and sustainable. schools need to be cleaned daily as do hospitals, govt offices etc.

So of the 25 odd companies i hold shares in i regard UGL as my 'best bet' as it has massive potential to grow, on track for 9% (68c) divs in 09 and is SAFE. i have been hammered this past 5 months after switching from an ultra bear into a moderate bull. I need to protect and hopefully grow my capital. UGL suits all my criteria. It consistently keeps winning more contracts despite the downturn. Read the ann. Every fortnight they produce good news!! Worth a close look IMO.
