Troops arrested while escorting asylum seekers

Indonesian authorities have intercepted 41 asylum seekers heading to the south-west Java coast with a military escort.

Early this morning Indonesian port police intercepted a convoy of asylum seekers from Iran and Syria heading to the coast in minibuses.

The group, which included women and children, were escorted by five Indonesian military officers who were in uniform but are believed to have been unarmed.

The head of port police intelligence, Maryoto, has told the ABC the officers were arrested and handed over to military police for questioning.

He says the group, which included one pregnant woman, was intending to board a boat at Palangpang beach in Pelabuhanratu to travel to Christmas Island.
